Born in the château of villette near Paris, Emmanuel, marquis Grouchy, was an officer of the Guard in 1789, then, joining the revolution of 1789, would take part in all the major Napoleonic campaigns (Friedland, Wagram, Borodino, etc). Faithful to napoléon i during the hundred days, he was made a marshal. At the head of the reserve cavalry in the Army of the North, he could not prevent, after the victory at Ligny, General Gebhard Blucher from joining with General Wellington, making Marshal Grouchy partly responsible for the defeat at Waterloo. He sought refuge in America and returned to France in 1821. King louis-philippe named him a peer of France in 1832. Marshal Grouchy is the author of Mémoires (posthumous, 1873).
